“What is the connection between Abey Tsom (The Great Lent) and Begena?” Is a question we are often asked in various interviews and social media interactions. To answer this question let’s look at the nature of The Great Lent and the nature of Begena as well as the history behind these connections.
Seeking in Solitude
In the Orthodox Tewahedo Church, Lent is a time of fasting and seeking God. Self examination and fasting through not only food but all senses. The famous words of Saint Yared says
“Let the ears also fast from what it listens to, Let the mouth fast of what it speaks and let the eyes fast of what they see”
The nature of Begena is also similar to the teachings of lent. Begena is exclusively for worshiping God. Begena is an instrument of solitude it does not need other helping instruments or an ensemble. Begena song lyrics are of deep self examination. Thus, Begena is a great instrument of worship and a spiritual prayer aid for Lent.
History of Begena during Lent
Historically during the imperial years of Ethiopia, Radio stations exclusively played Begena in their stations per his Majesty’s Emperor Haile Selassie’s orders. This left a great impact on the people of Ethiopia. Kids that grew up during that time associate Begena with Lent. In addition traditional singers often abstain of singing and performing secular songs during lent, thus Begena songs such as (Medina and zelesegna) are sang to remind oneself of Death’s inevitability and God’s unfailing Love and Grace, as well as the observances during lent.
A timeless Instrument
This being said Begena is an instrument of all time, it is a spiritual weapon that is always relevant and a healer of depression and various mental illnesses.
“Just like food is for everyday but the type of food changes during different celebrations and times, so is Begena a daily instrument, The poetry used in the lyrics and the melodies may change based on the time and situation. Nevertheless Begena is a daily weapon”
-Ermias Haylay
